- Other foreign activities saw Alan as a tourism policy specialist and academic adviser in fifteen countries
- Retired in 2001 and now living near Oxford here, he is available as a speaker.

- Taught myself the bagpipe in 1992 while working near Lucerne as Dean at Schiller University.
- Played the bagpipe once a week for a group of adults with severe learning difficulty. Often using the bagpipe and wearing various uniforms.
